Well, the money ran out, so I’m back. (See last post.) Since last I wrote, we’ve had a good trip and a month of great weather. The kids have started attending a homeschool co-op twice a week, so their social lives are much more enjoyable and I get an office out of the deal.
Well, it’s actually just a table upstairs next to the rest rooms at the local library, but there’s free wi-fi, running water (at the water fountain) and I’m surrounded by books. The big bonus is that it’s actually quite a bit quieter than working at home is.
So, life is good, except for the usual political and governmental stuff that’s going on in the country and the world. Is it just me or are we living in Mirror Land?
It’s a documented fact that Republican administrations have historically been more likely to produce times of war and economic turmoil. Democratic administrations, on the other hand, tend to be times of peace and prosperity for the most part. So why is it that everything I read and hear seems to say just the opposite?
It’s also true that Republican administrations have created more regulations curbing personal freedoms than Democratic administrations, so why are they still shouting that they’re the party of fewer regulations? Why is it okay to tell me that I can’t gamble online, for instance, but not okay to tell a financial institution that they can’t gamble with my 401K funds in risky sub-prime mortgage investments?
But let’s not just pick on the Repubs. Let’s look at another facet of our culture that drives me berserk. How in the world can anyone keep a straight face when they say that America is a Christian nation like that makes us better than other countries? I mean, come on, turn on the tv and watch what Joe and Josie Six Pack watch after 8 and tell me this is a country that believes what the Bible (or Koran or Torah or any other holy book) teaches.
Every night it’s reality TV, people being mean and sadistic for the fun of it, contestants being dissed and made fun of by emcees, talk shows that are one long shouting match. Then there are the movies like “Kill Bill” and the moronic and sophomoric comedies that have to stand on stilts to get to the lowest common denominator of sleaze.
So, evidently, this is the answer to “What Would Jesus Watch?” I don’t think so. No, this is the answer to “How hypocritical can people get?” and also would work with “How stupid do they think we are?” Well, I’m not that stupid. However, i do believe that this IS a Christian nation, because I believe that most people who claim to be Christians are just saying that for two reasons.
One: If you’re not a Christian, at least on the outside, you’re nobody in our society. Being Christian is just something that other people take for granted about you. That’s why atheists like me have such a hard time fitting into our society.
Two: People are afraid of dying and going to hell. Yup. You’d be surprised at the people who believe that all you have to do is believe in Jesus and God and – no matter what horrible things you do while you’re alive – when you die, you go to heaven.
Then again, that’s what it says in the Bible. Honest. Hey, I spent 13 years going to Sunday School at a Hardshell Baptist Church where my mother was church lady, so I know my Bible. Jesus says that all you have to do is believe in him and you’ll have everlasting life. If you don’t believe me, look up John 3:16 in your King James Version.
Talk about a sweetheart deal. Not by good works do we get into the Harp and Halo Room at that Heavenly Hotel. I’m surprised that they haven’t made a reality show out of that yet. Hmm, maybe they could channel Saint Ronnie and have him do the voiceover.
